Okay, I loved it! I mean, as is the case anytime you watch a film after just reading the book, you’re bound to nitpick about things that weren’t there at all (Vincent & much of Camille’s life story were the biggest parts) and question some of the added material (the scenes of Philibert at the speech therapist weren’t necessary, just seemed like a way to build up the part a little bit). And of course, fitting a novel into 92 minutes is going to make it seem like things were just touched upon so quickly… but not in the way that oh, The Golden Compass felt. Possibly because the novel itself has such a light & breezy tone, the film’s breeziness felt just right. Of course I wanted more, but mostly because I love these characters and the actors were just right. Audrey Tautou was the best she has been since A Very Long Engagement (ok maybe Hors de Prix) and Guillaume Canet… well, he is the only person who could have played Franck to my satisfaction.
All in all, if you get the opportunity to see this (I had to get a Canadian DVD from amazon as it’s not available yet in the US), you definitely should. But absolutely read Anna Gavalda’s novel, too.
